I’m Flying!

Ethan Vilu

The sudden heartbeat of summer gives rise

to my loon calls; scars spread-eagled,

red talons clutching tin wings.

The earth must know I’m playing for keeps.

The sun is brassy nectar in my hands.

I dive away, relinquish the splintered step.
